In 1876, the clever engineers took a bunch of wood they had gotten for free from the land owners and built this bridge over the Russian River. It usually was referred to as "The Bridge" but technically it is The Russian River Bridge at Cosmo.

The bridge design seems unusual today, but the Howe Truss was invented by William Howe, from Spencer, Massachusetts. He patented his new truss design in 1840, and extended the patent in 1850 with design improvements. The Howe Truss was originally designed to combine diagonal timber compression members and vertical iron rod tension members.
