CAPE HORN
Russian River created a canyon for itself millions of years ago. Several places are more cliffs than river banks. When they are made of solid rock, a bit of dynamite fixes the problem. One place was not so easily fixed. Cape Horn. The hill is not a rock, it is a bunch of small rocks held together with clay. Slides have been so common for the railroad and the California Highway Department that eventually this supposedly slide proof creation was built. It is worth including if only because it represents the most money spent since 1876 for any place in the entire Russian River valley.
A letter from Korbel one year after the arrival of the train is already having a bit of problems with the sliding earth known as Cape Horn.
This point is no longer known as Cape Horn, but it was well known in early days by anyone having to get from one side to the other. It was common for it to collapse onto a blocked train track or road.
